The distance ladder to nearby stars is very accurate, but the further out you go, the shakier the ladder gets. The distance of nearby stars is determined by parallax. That is, if you use the diameter of the earth's orbit around the sun as a baseline, you fix where the nearby star is in the heavens in the summer, and then in the winter you take another fix. Because the star is relatively nearby, it will appear to have shifted a tiny bit, just like when you hold your thumb up at arms length and alternate closing your left and right eyes - it will look like your thumb is shifting back and forth against the background. If you know the amount of shift and the angles of your very long skinny triangle (two baseline points and the star is the apex), you can calculate the length of the sides. That is the essentially what a parallax measure is. For stars further out than, say, 30 light years, this no longer works. They are too far away to detect a shift through parallax. This is why we see the night sky as two-dimensional. If our eyes were a light year apart, we would see the sky in 3 dimension - you could actually see which star is closer and which one is further away, regardless of how bright each star is.
For greater distances, other methods are used, like a star's apparent brighness (apparent magnitude) versus how bright that particular type of star would appear if it were only 10 light years away (absolute magnitude). That measurement gets us quite a ways out into our galaxy. For extragalactic stars, a certain type of star is used as a "standard candle." That star is a Cephid variable star. Our own north star, Polaris, is such a star. Cephids vary in brightness at a known rate, and our instruments, like the Hubble telescope, can actually "see" stars in nearby galaxies, and the Cephid stars in the Andromeda give us a measurement for Andromeda's distance -- about 2.4 million light years.
Other methods are also used for more distant galaxies, out to many millions of light years distant, but the accurancy for billions of light years out can be off by as much as 50%.

1420 A.D. Central Asia Ulugh Beg (1394-1449), noted astronomer, had an observatory built at Samarkand in central Asia. The observatory was a 3-story building, but also contained instruments that were outdoors. Ulugh Beg's observatory produced astronomical tables that included a catalogue of over 1,000 stars. Ulugh Beg succeeded to the trhone of the province of Transoxiana in 1447 upon the death of his father. He was murdered in 1449 by an assassin hired by his son 'Abd al Latif. By then, his observatory had enjoyed three decades of existence. And he is remembered as perhaps the most important observational astronomer of the 15th century.
