On the Virginia Website

Is the Notary Handbook. It's .pdf document. It states that a notary cannot charge more than $5.00 for the notarial act (plus travel expenses). Can't copy from it because the pdf is locked, but you can download your own copy from the VA website!

Well I'm in West Virginia and I'm a Notary. Personally I don't charge anything but the max I can charge is $2 per Notarizing. Now you know why I don't charge anything.

Go to your Secretary of State's website under Notary and get your state rules. It will show in there. In California it's $10 per signature!

They are a private service provider. As much as they want.

Some states may set limits, as part of the license requirements. But those laws would vary by state. You can check Virginia's laws on the official state website.
