Don't worry about being popular. Get a small group of friends on your side that you can trust. Then have a larger group of "acquaintances" but don't rely on them because it's high school after all, and they will stab you in the back.
The best way to talk to people you have nothing in common with is to get them to talk about themselves. Every human being wants to tell someone else about their life and themselves. Just ask them something about what they do (whether its sports or an afterschool club or if working as a stocker sucks, etc...). Make sure they know you are listening.
The key to being popular at any age (real popularity, not fake image bull**** when you're a kid) is to be a good listener. People want to be around others who are interested in hearing what they have to say. Even if you aren't really into what that person is all about, showing an interest in what they value is a good way to establish repoir and friendship.
AND..if not, if they're stuck up or they cut you down..well then they're an a****** and let them burn the bridge..cut slingload and talk to someone else.
In the REAL WORLD adults call this networking and that's how you get better jobs, better pay, people who can get you "in" on what you want/need, etc...
Just be careful with how you start conversations, so you don't get punched in the face lol...sometimes young kids get threatened by someone asking too many questions..
Seriously, high school is a good time to learn how to network, because it doesn't mean d*ck when you leave and you have nothing to lose.

Just be yourself and you'll attract only the type of person that can truly be your friend. Being popular in high school sounds important to you now but trust me, it's not all it's cracked up to be. I used to be somewhat shy too and still am at times but when you get older, you worry less about what others think of you and that starts to eleminate the shyness.

Don't be fake and don't be desperate, its not worth it to be popular. If you want to meet people participate in activities that interest you, that is where you will eventually meet new people and probably end up friend. Just don't be afraid to go out on a limb to meet and hang out with new people. Being popular isn't all that its cracked to be if anything its better to have a couple people that are Truly good Friends, than a bunch of people who are just acquaintances.
