My brother has an 1997 ford ranger xlt. When he turns the key all lights and electronics come on but when he tries to start it nothing happens. Not a click like from a dead battery or anything. What could be the problem?

If the vehicle has a standard transmission, there is a safety switch under the dash connected to the clutch pedal - most likely has failed.
If automatic check the park/neutral switch. On most Fords the switch is located where selector shaft enters the trans.

I had this same problem a few months ago. It sounds like a broken battery. Sometimes, if the battery has been bumped around a bit, or if the terminals have been over-tightened, the connection between the terminal and the internal lead plates breaks off. The metal is still touching a little, so some current still flows - but when you try the starter (a major drain on the battery), the connection can't handle it, and it goes completely dead. And if you get the battery tested, it will often test as in good condition.

Try juggling the battery cables and terminals (but not too hard) while a buddy tries to crank the engine. If you get an occasional noise, or if the lights flicker on and off, then this is your most likely problem.

Maybe the starter relay isn't working? If it's broken or jammed open, trying to start can cut your power, but won't give you any of the usual clicking noises.

If these ideas don't help, then I'm lost.

Good luck!

Shifter interlock switch, try starting in neutral. I have a 91 Taurus, that does that on occasion. Some times I can put my foot on the brake, shift out of park and back into park and it will start. sometimes I have to start it in neutral. If the shift leaver mounting bracket in the steering column is loose it can cause this.
If the dash light dim when you try to start, may be a bad solenoid or relay.

We need more info, is it automatic or standard. I would look at the starter solenoid. This truck has 2, one on the inner fender and one on the starter. Even good auto techs have trouble with these. Be sure to also check your grounds. Grounds are the most neglected circuit on autos today. Good luck. DO NOT HIT the starter with anything, they have ceramic plates that will break and now the starter will be junk and it may not be the problem, test twice - change once.

A warm battery cable to starter shows severe resistance or a foul cable. you want to change it. and consider were given to eliminate the starter. And in doing so that you may study the starter and per chance considering that age of motorcar basically replace it besides.

it could be the starter if you can get under the truck and tap on it with a scredriver or something that will work if it is the starter and then if that works you will need to get a new one

clean all the connections, check the posts on the starter, if it still persists, check the relay, selioid. if this doesnt work, remove the starter have it tested.
