Hi, I have just bought a Renault Laguna Estate (s reg) so the older version. It only had one key with it and its a bit of a pain as hubby could do with one too as a spare. I have seen them on Ebay for not a lot of money but I assume they need to be programmed or something to work the central locking and ignition?
Does anyone know if this is right and if so roughly how much it will cost me to get it done please.
I am in the U.K.
Cheers.

The key needs to be cut to match the physical locks, then the car's central locking and immobiliser need to be programmed to recognise the electronic chip in the new key.
You'll need to take the car, proof of ownership and ID, the existing key and the new key to a Renault dealer, and pay their prices.

Check with the dealer first. I know that Renault UK have introduced new security measures to the supply of replacement card-keys for the newer Laguna and Mégane models after some thefts (they now will not programme a car to recognise a key they have not supplied, and you have to prove ownership before Renault UK will accept an order for a new key). If the same applies for older models, then a key bought on ebay is a waste of money.

I had to get a new key cut for my peugeot 306. what a pain that was! it cost around £35 and yes it does need to be specially programmed if its got central locking. Just make sure you ask for the key number if you don't already have that information because that makes things go much quicker if you ever have to cut another key in future

I'm guessing the price wouldn't be that much different..

some vehicles are able to clone up to 3 or 4 duplicate keys from the master. the drivers handbook will tell you if this facility is an option. failing that a good key shop can cut & program keys for you. a cheaper option may be to get standard non chiped keys cut & use these. & tape the master to the steering column or steering lock out of sight so the master chip is within the required proxscmity

Renault dealer only. they will need the existing key and the car to program the car's security systems for the new key. You may be asked to show proof of ownership. NB I think renault only allow 2 keys to be programed to the car at any one time

I know a shop in Kidderminster that will do these keys for around £35. That's better than anything from around £100 to £200plus from main dealers.

dear u.k. your key must be duplicated at the dealer or if you have a reputable locksmith that deals wwith car keys .....they have to get your cars vin # in order to make a duplicate otherwise the key will fit the ign. but it will not start and run.
