No...psychologists can NOT write prescriptions. You can see a psychiatrist or family doctor for prescriptions.

No, miss, a psychologist cannot write you
prescription. It has to be an MD or PA or
a psychiatrist. A psychologist has a different
type of degree than a medical doctor, and
a shrink is a medical doctor, because
of AMA rules and other rules. Good luck,
and be careful with those AD's.

It depends on what state you live in. Psychologists with additional training in psychopharmacology can prescribe medications in a few states, such as New Mexico. There are some military psychologists who also have prescriptive rights. However in general, medical doctors & advanced nurse practitioners are the main ones who can write prescriptions.

No, unless they are also a medical professional with prescription writing abilities (M.D., O.D., Physician's Assistant [P.A.],certain nurse practitioners.)

Psychiatrists usually prescribe psychotropic medications (i.e., anti-depressants, anti-anxiety, etc.) . They are specialized M.D.'s.

While psychologists are "doctors", their degree is a Ph.D. or Psy.D. or Ed.D. and not an M.D.

If you are seeing a psychologist and she/he believes you need anti-depressant medication, sign a release of information and have them consult with your primary care physician, or refer you to a psychiatrist.
