Sorry to say, the Memory Stick is the only way to hold data for the PSP. You can format it and try installing again, or try a different Memory Stick altogether. I had that problem once, good thing I had an extra Memory Stick from my old PSP. I used that, and the update installed just fine. Also, you can download the file through System Update in the PSP XMB (Xross Menu Browser; the menu, you know.) You will have to have a WiFi connection in order to download the file, and a Memory Stick inside the PSP. To have a WiFi signal, you would have to have a wireless router. Try that, and remember, if both sticks don't work, you mayhave a dirty stick reader in your PSP or it might be faulty. If that's the case, you can phone Sony (check their website for the number in your region) and let them know what happens. If your PSP's warranty has expired, they charge $120 for repair, and additional shipping & handling charges, I think. You would have to ship the console out, unless none of that happens and another stick works and correctly installs the update.
Good luck, and remember, the latest and greatest is version 3.11.

Yes you can up-date your firm ware via a usb cable but you memory card will need to be in good working order. I wouldn't go to firmware 3.11. Have you considered trying home-brew. It's got lots of benefits. If you go to 3.11 these benefits won't be available to you.
