Is it normal for a baby (4 month old male) to sleep most of his day?
He runs all over the place - normal ferret spazzing behavior for about a 15 min-1/2 hr each time out (3 times a day). Then he crashes and crawls into one of my drawers and goes to sleep.
He is out of his cage about 5 or more hours a day, spread out (an hour in the morning, 1-2 in the afternoon, and the rest at night). He is eating fine (1/2 cup or so of Zupreem a day).
I have only dealt with adult ferrets who do not spazz quite so much, but are active a lot longer.

Basically, is this normal ferret behavior? I thought they were supposed to be high maintenance, but I am the one who is always waking him up. He plays fine once he is up, but the minute I leave him alone- he goes to sleep.

ferrets do need a lot of sleep. i think they get more active as they grow older. my ferret is now 3 years old, and i remember when she crawled into her cage and went to sleep all by herself.
now it seems like she hates to sleep! I have to manually put her into her cage, and turn out the light for her to settle down.
also each ferret has a different personality, like the female i've been talking about has always had a playful, energetic nature, but our male, ever since we got him, loves to sleep, so he had a lazy nature. he passed away in november though :(

don't worry, your ferret seems happy and healthy to me!! i hope i helped :)

this is how ferrets are. they sleep for 4 hours then get up and poop and eat. then they sleep for 4 hours and get up and poop and eat. then they sleep for 4 hours and get up and poop and eat.
LOL for real, ferrets have to eat every 4 hours and goo potty and then sleep. unless you play with it, to keep their attention span going then after they play the sleep for 4 hours and ETC.
i have a free roaming ferrets and i do what we call a "FERRET COUNT" every 24 hours to make sure they are ok. sometimes i am at school or work and i wont see my ferrets for 3 days. i leave a note on the door that says NOTICE!!! WHEN IS THE LAST TIME YOU HAVE SEEN BOB OR BARNEY????? so when i come in from work or whatever, everyone in my house has answewred my question, with a who what where and when. this makes me feel good and i feel that they are safe even when i am not around.

Yes, ferrets sleep a lot but they are very active when not sleeping. this is typical behaviour for all ferrets.
