He is 12 and I let him get both ears pierced and his father and others are very upset about this. They said that the right ear means that the person is homosexual and both ears means this. He says a lot of people have both ears done and they aren't homosexual. It's nothing against the gay people, it's just that he isn't and I don't want people to perceive him this way. He's catching a lot of flack as well as me and we would appreciate any answers or opinions. Thank you so much.

I am sure that there will be some individuals who might think your son is gay but it is really more common now for kids to get both ears pierced.

I would take this as a learning opportunity. You say that you have nothing against homosexuals. Now, you are seeing a small portion of what homosexuals face every single day of their lives. Take a stand with the idiots that are making comments and tell them this just a teen thing. However, I urge you to highlight the statements people are making and showing them prejudice is wrong.

Having both ears pierced does not say anything about a person's gender orientation. Most younger boys who get their ears pierced get both done today. My son is almost 12 years old and has had both ears pierced since he was four years old. No one has ever said anything about him being homosexual.

These rules no longer apply - no one your son's age will assume he is gay because he has both ears pierced. That is so 20 years ago. This generation pierces and tattoos for very different reasons than my generation did (I am 43 yo). As someone who works at colleges, I can tell that plenty of young men with both ears pierced chase girls.

Vicki, Vicki, VICKI! You MUST be joking? How small is the town you live in? The whole earring "code" thing went out with um.... The Village People in the VERY early eighties. The child is twelve. People wouldn't possibly question his sexuality. And if they do, there is something wrong with THEM, not you.

And... ps... by the way.... what if he were to grow up, say five years from now, and tell you that he IS gay? It's always a possibility for any parent to hear. Teach him tolerance regardless whatever he puts in his ears.

I've heard of the right ear piercing meaning they're gay. But I've never heard of both meaning their gay, there were lots of guys I knew that had both ears pierced, and I still know guys that have both their ears pierced and I've never heard that before.

Time has evolved since the original left, right ear "rules". It absolutely does not mean he's gay or even thinking anything like that. He just thinks it's cool. Look at how many celebrities have both ears pierced.

I have nothing against homosexuals but, the stereotype is that right=gay, left=straight, and not many people get both ears pierced, though i think it should be based upon his actions. And why should it matter if he's gay or not, if he is, do u have a problem with it?

There's no pattern, doesn't mean anything anymore. Gay is who you are attracted to, now how many holes you punch in your God-given body or where. Some boys do look effeminate if they have pierced ears, some just look hot, some look pretty stupid. In America, we all have a right to look stupid if we want.

Personally, I think you're off your rocker to let your young son do this in Western society. Did you ever hear of parental responsibility? Of course, piercings like this aren't permanent. Just make him take out the studs, and the holes will heal over.

Now about that tattoo....

There is so much crap about ear piercing. If you get it there your gay on the west coast, if you get it there you are gay on the east coast. A boy at 12 does not NEED his ears pierced. You should have discussed this with your husband first. His sexuality is not in question here, you are. Did he really want it done? Your the adult here, put the foot down and be a mom. If it was your idea...DEE, DEE, DEE.
