It's primary use is in making ammonia through the Haber process (N2 + 3H2 -> 2 NH3 under catalysis at high pressures and temperatures), for fertilizer, which is used to feed the entire planet and for explosives to blow it up.

Nitrogen itself is often used as liquid nitrogen to keep things very cold (medical samples, chemicals, etc.) or in gas form as an inert gas (if you have very reactive things they can react with oxygen, but they won't with nitrogen).
