I'm 15 years old, and i felt it was a very good read. The introduction was a little bit confusing, but it got me hooked. It had some really intense parts, but it had its down parts too. I read the sequel, Eldest, and am looking forward to the conclusion. I havn't seen the movie, but would definitely like to.
Overall, I would give the book a 4.

I would give it something between a one and a two. The reason is simple, really, the whole book is poorly written. The style is very basic. I constantly found myself thinking of ways Paolini could have phrased things to make them read better. Grammatically it's sound, but it's nothing special. Plot wise, the whole book is basically Star Wars with dragons. There's nothing unique going on here. Every supposed plot twist is easy to spot and predict. The characters are flat and there's no emotional connection what so ever. Never do you fear for the hero's life. When characters die, there's no emotional attachment so it's hard to feel any form of grief or distress. On the whole, I was highly disappointed with this book. Everyone raved about it, so I went ahead and read it and even Eldest (hoping that maybe somehow it would improve; it didn't). I don't think Eragon would have gotten nearly the amount of attention it did if it hadn't been written by a fifteen year old. The publishers sold the book based on the history of the author, not the merits of the book itself. If this had been written and submitted by an adult author, I truly believe it would have been rejected at once. If you're looking for a truly awesome fantasy to read try a Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin or Dragon's Winter by Elizabeth A. Lynn. But leave Eragon on the shelf where it belongs.

I would give it a two. The author is obsessed with using the thesaurus and it comes off awkwardly. It reads like a Lord of the Rings knock off and has nearly the exact same plot as Star Wars. There is a difference between following an archetype and blatantly using the same story as another work.
If you don't read all that much or are under the age of 14, I think you might enjoy it.
Paolini's avoidance of the word "said" also bothers me quite a lot. There is actually a sentence in Eragon that says, "I'm sorry," apologized Brom.
But hey, if you aren't really looking for a great book, and just want an OK fun read, then it is enjoyable.
The movie was one of the worst pieces of cinema ever crapped out by Hollywood.

Of course this is only my personal opinion, but I would have to give it a 2 1/2, and only because I'm feeling generous.
As to why, well the whole thing read like a Lord of the Rings knockoff. The tone and language, I mean, not necessarily the storyline. I wouldn't give a book a bad rating because of an unorginal plot. At this point in time, there aren't any totally original plots. I think Paolini will become a better and more original sounding writer as he gets older, but for now, I just can't get into his books.
And yes, the movie DID suck. I didn't take issue with the necessary changes the plot needed in transition from book to movie. It's just 100 minutes is way too short a time to tell a story that epic, and the whole thing just felt rushed.

if five is the highest, I rate it a 10. This is one of the best books I've ever read. It is exciting, sad (I cry every time i read Eragon and see the movie), romantic in bk. 2 and also teaches good morales. I would highly recommend it.

I personally loved this book. I give it a 4.7. The ending pushed me off for a while, and I didn't quite get the story until a few chapters in. However, the plot is excellent, the charachters are wonderfully interesting, and it is overall delightful. Eldest, the sequel, is also very good.

4.5- This book is well written and has an abosorbing plot. It answers questions often left untouched in most fantasy books. However, the protagintist has a cliche begining (or so it seems) and, while I haven't noticed it, I've heard that some place-names are taken from other books.
