I am an elementary education major, and have been doing clinicals in several classrooms. I have been noticing a trend to move away from individual desks for the students and instead have them at large tables. Going through school the only grades I had tables in were kindergarten and sixth. I myself kind of preferred the desks, because I had a place to keep all of my things and it was easy to find what I needed. This classroom I am working in now has tables and it seems really awkward. The students keep their books and folders in cardboard holder and some of their items such as glue and scissors are kept in a tub on another shelf in the room. As a teacher do you see more advantages to using tables rather than desks? What are your thoughts?

you should swithc back to the desks, but keep them in a group of 4 or 5. I think its better for the kids when they have other children with them to learn instead of the rows.

Desks that way all the students have a place to put there things. But the tables keep unwanted things out of the classromm such as IPODS or other things because they have no where to put them

As a former elementary student, I have to say, tables suck. We were seated two to a table. By third grade, the tables weren't really big enough for two strudents to be seated at one. The crowding caused a lot of elbowing and fighting.

Well in elementary school they do a lot of activities, and I think it would be best to have tables because they have so much more room to work on.

I used tables because my students complete a lot of projects, and I like to use group work.

Desks allow students to be disorganized and distracted.

I even have numerous them. i take advantage of them plenty -- quite on the beginning up of the twelve months. as quickly as we get going, quite in direction of evaluation of issues that those "helpers" may well be used as "cheat sheets" on, I take them off and positioned on a greater "standard" call tag. quite when you consider that my scholars rotate to numerous instructors for different undertaking aspects. sure, i'm conversing conventional grades.
