The purpose of breathing is to take oxygen into the body and into the blood. The fetus can not and does not need to breathe air because all the oxygen needs are supplied by the mother via the umbilical cord. The heart actually has a different structure before birth, and blood is shunted away from the lungs, since they are not being used. Within minutes of birth fetal circulation changes dramatically so that the heart pumps much more blood to the lungs, where it becomes oxygenated.

the newborn would not favor to breath to live on in utero. The amniotic fluid is swallowed by ability of the newborn and recycled by ability of that's urine. The amniotic fluid serves as protection for the newborn, floating round in there for 9 months. each of the newborn's foodstuff/oxygen come from the placenta, connected to the newborn by ability of the umbilical twine. I actually have seen my little ones "practice breath" by ability of observing my abdomen in overdue being pregnant. My physician informed me it replaced into an indication that the newborn's lungs were maturing and she replaced into basically making waiting for outdoors the womb.

A fetus is what it is called before it enters the world. The fetus starts to swallow the fluid around 10 weeks and then breath it in around 14 weeks. They also can taste at 14 weeks. Here is a link to information about when things occur inside the womb ...... http://www.birthpsychology.com/lifebefore/fetalsense.html

They get their oxygen from the blood that enters the umbilical cord from the mother. The placenta makes sure the baby gets enough oxygen. When the baby is delivered, the placenta no longer can give the baby the oxygen it needs because it is delivered, too. The lungs are one of the last organs to develop in babies, which is why premature babies often have breathing problems.

They dont breathe because they are in amniotic fluid. However they do practice breathing with the amniotc fluid. I can see my stomach moving in a breathing motion where the baby is and the ultrasound tech pointed it out to me also the other day, telling me..."See she is practicing her breathing."
You baby takes intermittent deep breaths -- of water! That's okay, though since she gets oxygen from the placenta. This breathing exercises muscles and encourages her lung cells to produce more surfactant (a protein essential for healthy lung development). ..This is from pregnancy .com

They don't breathe because there is no air. Just liquids.
It doesn't kill them, because their lungs are not mature enough to need to breathe.

There lungs haven't fully developed yet. And i think they start breathing in the 7th month, not the 9th.
