I choose the third option - where I don't give up, but do it without fighting.

You asked a question which goes to the heart & value of wisdom:

Knowing when to hold on... and knowing when to let go.
Knowing when to say "Yes," and when to say "No."
To fight, or to retreat? Both are strategies that must be used in combination - both on the battlefield, and in life.

The easiest practical example is love: when to keep fighting for your lover... or when to let a lover go?

Unfortunately, only you can decide when to keep fighting or when to give up, because neither solution should be used for all problems. You also did not describe your goal or situation, which makes it difficult to offer a 3rd person assessment of your individual situation.

My only suggestion is, if it is something inside your Self that is truly, deeply, close to your heart (a dream, an ideal, a passion, a love), then perhaps it is worth fighting for. If it is something outside of your Self (like a person, or a particular job, etc.), then perhaps it may be better to let go.

There are also middle ways which you can consider:
1) temporarily letting go, and fighting later.
2) searching for another way to achieve your goal.
3) a compromise.

That depends what the goal is. How important it is to you, how important it is to other people/things, what you would have to do or sacrifice to "win" the fight and whether it's reasonable for you to have to make that effort should all be taken into consideration. If your goal is to win a fist fight, not so important to keep at it. If your goal is to complete your education, that would be pretty worthwhile. If helping a friend in need is your goal, that is worthwhile. However, if you would have to go to extraordinary lengths to do that, like mortgaging your house to lend them money, that might be too much to ask.

Generally speaking, fear of having to make an effort is never a good reason to give up on a goal, but any number of other reasons might be very good.

that really depends. if youre giving up too much of what you can afford just to achieve the goal then I say its better to give it up. Only when youre in harmony with everything that you believe in, your values and principles .. thats when a goal is worth the fight.

That depends directly on how important the goal is to you.
