My 1986 Cougar has the proverbial rusted out bottom of doors due to the window belts (the parts the window slides through into the door). I have no welding experience, but also very little money. Would I be okay renting a welder and cutting/welding new metal to the doors, or should this be left to a professional?

Thanks!

the best thing you could do for the cheapest is find a whole new door at a junk yard ive been through this several times the cost to fix will be pretty darn spendy and if you have no weldin ex then its not a good idea too cause thats some thin steel and its very easy to burn a hole in it you can usualy work out a deal with the wrecking yard the paint wont match more than likely so buff it down and find somebody that will paint it or just leave it be that color if you put a new door on it will be a two man job!!!!!!!! and also reaplace the hinge, pin and bushings this should be the cheapest and easyest way

You would save more time and money just replacing these door assemblies...trust me..

There is something called the point of dimishing returns on work done....Rust on a limited panel is one of them.

If it was the main chassis then I'd say do it.

Will yield you people with the parts for sale....from all over.

welding is tricky....just get a bunch of estimates.....i had a friend get her floor boards fixed by a shop that welded pieces in for under 100 bucks...renting one will probably cost almost as much as the repair
