There are a lot of adverts on TV about the effect of passive smoking. I know three loney disabled people, who smoke.
One of them I see briefly twice a week, one I haven't seen for a while, one I see quite a lot, she smokes 300 a week.
My problem is with the 300 a week one, she requires and wants a lot of help, I buy a lot of her shopping because she can't get out, I make her drinks, feed her bird, and help her around her flat. I have told her I don't like her smoking when I eat my sandwiches, but she does, she got annoyed when a paid carer opened a window to escape the smoke.
In these circumstances, how can I avoid being a passive smoker?

Nothing you can do except ask her politely if she could avoid smoking in your presence.

of course she got annoyed, it is her right to do as she wishes in her house.
as a smoker i am sick to death of being victimised at every opportunity....i agree it is a horrible habit, i do not want to force people to breathe my smoke, i will not smoke in my own house never mind anyone elses and i can understand how bad it smells to non smokers (stopped for 4 months last year, believe me, we stink)
but....we have acid rain and other pollution in the air all the time, which you breathe 24/7, car/bus/lorry exhausts are chuffing out poison constantly (sit in a room with a car engine running you will die)
emissions from industry are all around and much more toxic than a smoke yet we get the blame for causing deaths.
sorry, i will respect a non smokers wishes wherever possible, but all this hype is taking people away from the real reasons.
passive smoking?
more likely to die from passive driving.

Only one answer to this, don't go near people who smoke.
Ask your supervisor at work, or manager, they need to be aware of the problem, you have rights, you have rights not to work where people are smoking, I sure this should apply to people who, like you have to go into other peoples properties who smoke.
If all else fails, get a note from you doctor to your employer, telling them that passive smoking is not good for your health.
My dad was in a job, where people he work with smoke, a note from his doctor to his company, sorted out the problem.
Good luck in your quest.

Simple answer to this one, dont go to her house anymore, i am a smoker myself (for my sins) and if somebody asked me not to smoke whilst they were eating i wouldn't and i dont to be honest, but i would be slightly put out if somebody asked me not to smoke in my own home.
But to be fair even though you are helping this old lady out by doing her shopping and helping her around the house, it's her house and she can do as she pleases, if she wants to smoke 300 hundred fags then that's her choice, how ever if you dont wish to breathe in second hand smoke, stop the visits

300 what??!!?!? cigarettes? whoa thats like 42 cigs a day 2 cigarettes an hour god!!If it is that then get ninjas to throw smoking patches on her.Or you could put on a heavy duty gas mask THIS is why you don't start smoking.... but seriously you could use a folded up tissue to filter some smoke I think if that helps

You have a legal right not to inhale smoke when you are working. If you don't want to claim that right by telling your employer and insisting on it...then it is your own fault.
Don't claim to be in a dilemma because you are a carer...it is your responsibilty to claim your rights...no one elses.
Ask yourself why you care about people who do not care about you???

You're breathing in far nastier stuff out on the streets my dear - don't believe all this hype about smokers, it's a ploy to turn the people against the people and an effective way to distract from from traffic and industrial polution. Think on.

Aqualung. Or tell her you won;t be able to call araound anymore unless she stops smoking while you're there. I smoke but have no right to force people who don't want to into breathing it.
