Synthetic oil is better -- it has fewer impurities and develops sludge later and in lesser quantity -- but it's much more expensive. For a car like that, cost is a consideration, and the higher expense will add up over time. Is it worth it? The issue in synthetic oil has always been quality vs. cost-efficiency, and each driver has to decide that for him/her/it -self.
As the moving parts wear, it might be worthwhile to focus more on moving to higher-weight (i.e. higher-viscosity) oil, say, from 10W-40 to 20W-50, or whatever your owner's manual allows. On this last point, I'd like someone who's more knowledgeable than me to comment.

Regardless of what people are saying if you want the best honest protection for your engine, use 100% synthetic (AMSOIL). The first time you put AMSOIL in run it about 1,000 miles with a decent filter also (NAPA GOLD). Drain it after 1,000 miles you will not believe the deposits of crud that will come pouring out that the AMSOIL is cleaning out of the engine. Then the second time fill with AMSOIL run about 2,000 - 3,000 miles with NAPA filter. Then drain and refill again using a Donaldson filter this time and run your car for 25,000 miles or one year, that's right 25,000 miles that is the AMSOIL manufacturer specs!. Your car will run smoother, more power, better milege, and last you much longer. AMSOIL is the only oil in the world that offers a WARRANTY!!! On the bad side because this oil will dramatically clean your engines interior you may develop leaks if you have 150,000 miles of crude oil plugging up your broken seals. REMEMBER people think Synthetic oil is SO expensive, well you do the math approx. 15.00 (5 qts conventional oil) every 3,000 miles approx 30.00 (5 qts of AMSOIL) every 25,000 miles... hhmmm. Let's see so for 25,000 miles of oil changes we are looking at...
Conventional Oil = $120.00
AMSOIL .............= $ 30.00

also try some restore engine oil additive.

regular oil ,maybe high mileage oil ,but unless you've used synthetic since new the only benefit you will get is the longer change time, and a much lighter wallet.

At that high mileage. Switch to 10-30 and change your oil and filter every 3,000 miles. You will be fine.

If you'd like to extend your oil maintenence interval from 5K miles to 8K miles, use the synthetic blend.

i have switched my older cars to synthetic with no problems , they run quieter and you can go to a 5w-50 , something conventional oils cannot do
