I know this is a relatively 'hot topic.' I hear many children are overloaded and that homework that is assigned isn't that helpful. Do you think homework should be optional in grade school like it is in college? How many hours of homework do you or your child do a day? any thoughts are welcome!!!

Homework optional? No way. Demand that it be relevant? Absolutely.

Why would we punish children just learning about self discipline instead of holding teachers to some kind of standard? Make homework relevant & of a reasonable time length.

Sorry, I disagree that homework should be optional like in college. An 8 year old needs a different method of instruction than a 20 year old, no comparison. While you could easily argue that the college freshman still lacks discipline and would rather go play like the 8 year old (ha) the 18 year old is definitely capable of weighing the consequences and making an educated decision.

I don't know if that's a freedom &/or responsibility I'd want placed on grade schoolers. That seems cruel. It's just way too early to place the burden of a child's educattional path on their own shoulders. let alone robbing them of the chance to learn to multitask. Who doesn't need to know how to do that nowadays? Anyone?

I say spare the child, spoil the teacher. Make them put some thought into what they assign instead of blindly reading off a dozen pages without any thought to the child's other dozen or so outstanding assignments.

Homework should not be optional in grade school or even highschool.

I'm personally finishing my highschool at the moment. The assignments in grade school are needed because they build onto it in highschool. Math is one of them. the math that you know in grade 9 is needed for grade 10, and 11, and a little in 12. Simple alegebra.
History is needed it gives the student an idea of what did happen in the world. So they are with the times, and can realize how things have happened.
Sciences add onto each other and are needed.

The student needs to know the basic concepts and the best way is usually by giving them an assignment or homework. Too much homework can be kinda boring, and they may not want to do it.

I'm currently doing about 6-7 hours of homework each night and that is because im takeing 2 math classes and a physcics course.

The reason the children are "Overloaded" is because the parents are so busy trying to keep up with the trends and fads that the poor children are worn out! My child goes to Karate, on Monday, Gymnastics on Tuesday, Children's Choir on Wednesday, Dance class on Thursday, and Bowling league on Friday. We go camping on the weekend.
My poor child just doesn't have time to do homework and learn lessons at school. Why can't the school teach my child everything without bothering me. I work and then I am busy playing chauffeur and chatting with friends about all the activities my child is in and what a wonderful parent I am.

In grades 0 through 8 some home work is necessary, it helps kids learn. But 1. They don't always have someone home to help them with it, (regardless of wether or not a parent is home) even if that help is to give them the wrong answer, so that they can figure out the right answer. 2. in grades 8 through 12, there is such a thing as too much home work, and being so over loaded, they don't have a personal life, nor time to do their chores. That's never a good thing.

Homework isn't really optional in college. If you don't do it you can lose a lot of points depending on how much of your grade it is worth. I think that homework can be helpful because it makes you actually pay attention to what you are reading and hearing. However, there is a point where it seems as if it gets to be too much. Writing out information does help you to remember it but writing page after page after page can be over kill.
