I'm ok with pledging allegiance to the flag, but the "under god" was added during the red scare as a tactic to try to fight the McCarthyists. And figure out who they were. I highly doubt it was an effective method.
So i'm all for taking that part out, but good with kids pledging allegiance to a country which has at least provided me with wonderful opportunities.

Nobody is compelled to say the pledge of allegiance.
I had alot of teen angst when I was young, and things were alot different then. I got the crap beat out of me for refusing to say the pledge of allegiance (by classmates, not by the PTBs). But I still refused.
When Ronald Reagan became president I let go of all that angst and got a haircut because he really had this nation's best interests at heart, but all the presidents after the death of JFK until Reagan were puppets of the money elite.
Today if you don't say it nobody would think much of it.

Saying the Pledge of Allegiance is a way to promote patrionism. Saying it everyday might be a form of brainwashing also since we say so many times that we begin to think that way. Anyway, some people have a problem that that, but it is still a way to daily drive into our heads the thought of patriotism for our country.

Compelled... no. Many do it though because it is done where they happen to be at that moment. Myself, I haven't done it since I was a child in school. There is phrasing in the Pledge that is not to my liking.

I think people in this country should have to at least stand for the pledge, because it is just a form of respect. Countless people have died to insure our freedom, and it isnt right to show them a total disrespect by ignoring the flag which they died to protect.

I don't know. Most nations make their children develop some form of patriotism when they're young. I'm from Canada, and I still remember when in school we had to rehearse "God Save the Queen" and "Oh Canada" (bit of overkill if you ask me). I think it's pretty normal. Speaking as a person who is really against Nationalism, I don't really agree with it, I think Patriotism often blinds people instead of enlightens them. That said, I don't think it really harms people either.

No it should be illegal IMO. It is bullying people into being subservient to a piece of cloth.
I put my hand over my heart for years and faced the flag, knowing what a crock it was.
It is difficult to escape delusion in this world.

I asked my brother, still in high school. He said its optional nowadays (a requirement back in mine). I enjoyed it every morning, facing the flag with my hand over my heart. I believe it to be a way to show your love to your country. Not too many things can instill me with such a feeling like the star spangled banner. Semper Fi!

We don't do this in our school, but I don't think you should feel compelled to do anything that is uncomfortable to you, or anything you don't believe in. Everyone has their own opinions and shouldn't be forced into anything.
