i've seen the air drying or oven cooking clay in the shops and thought it would be great for my kids to make stuff, but its expensive. i was wondering if there was anything i could make that would be similar and dry hard so we can put on a shelf or something.

Here is a silly one, you take wonder bread, or a similar white bread. take off the crusts. squish up the bread, and mix with white glue. it does work!
I like using salt dough, but it can be a little hard on the hands. you may also find a recipe with corn starch.

my wifer makes her own dough for modelling... its just water and flour and about a pound of salt...

and bake it overnight on a low oven... lasts for years... and is easy to paint and varnish...

if the dough isnt baked hard, (usually coz its thick) it'll go soggy after a couple of weeks...
