If you are driving across, then no. I just recently drove to Detroit and back...no passport needed, although it was nice to have. They just asked for proof of citizenship. You will need one in 2008 for land crossings. In 2007 you need a passport for air travel into the US...

If you're driving, no. I'm not 100% sure about flying, but it's always a good idea to have one.

American visitors to Canada do not need a passport to enter Canada, however, non-American international visitors may find it more convenient to have one handy.

Heading back to the United States, American and Canadian citizens do not need a passport; however, bear in mind that you may be asked for one anyway, it just depends on the kind of customs agent you get (some are easy going, others are real tough numbers).

You do not need a passport to go to Canada or return to the US if you are travelling by land. Many people are confused with the new passport regulations. It is air travel between Canada and the US that now requires passports. It's not until 2008 that you will need a passport to return to the US by car.

From the US Department of state:
"The Departments of State and Homeland Security announced today that the requirement for citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere will begin on January 23, 2007."

" separate proposed rule addressing land and sea travel will be published at a later date proposing specific requirements for travelers entering the United States through land and sea border crossings. As early as January 1, 2008, U.S. citizens traveling between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea could be required to present a valid U.S. passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. If your American and flying and wanting to return back to the U.S. - yes

If your American and driving and wanting to return back to the U.S. - No (not just yet)

But do yourself a favour and just get one if you plan to do any travelling; its a universal piece of documentation that's accepted everywhere and nothing is worse than dealing with a nit picky immigration officer on a bad day.

Not just yet ....but the American government is fighting real hard to get that into operation A.S.A.P.
It would be advisable to bring at least three viable pieces of identification just in case. Homeland security south of Canada is really, really paranoid these days.
