I have a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am. And I was told by a mechanic that my water pump is going and it need replacement. How much should this procedure cost on avarage?

the pump is making like a grinding sound

it is not the impeller it is the bearings i was told

Ok how do you know it is going.
Here is 3 things to check
#1 is it leaking water out of the bottom?
#2 squeeze the top hose( after it has reached operating temp) and squeeze the hose. As you release it you will feel a rush of water
#3 Look at the pully and see if it is wobbling?
#4 Is it over heating( more likly a theromostate)?

If these things are NOT present your water pump is ok.
To replace it is a fairly easy job. About 1 hour
Depending on where you live plan on spending say 130-170

This is a very easy fix should not cost much these are easy to do check autozone.com for the price of the parts.

i had 1 replaced on my 1988 olds and it cost me $111.00.but he bought the water pump and the anti-freeze and that included the labor.if it wasnt in the winter,i would have changed it myself.
