Great question. Since a large part of our Government was based on the Roman Empires Government you have to wonder if history will once again repeat itself. Occupation of other countries such as we are doing now in Iraq is very expensive financially and costly in Human lives and it seems to be getting worse in Iraq and now Iran is looking like it could join the fray on a larger scale. . You would have thought that after Vietnam we may have learned something. When the Israelis went into Lebanon last year they were smart enough not to try and occupy the country even though militarily they certainly could have, you know they took a long look at what is going on in Iraq and decided the prudent thing was to send a message and bail. It seems that world wide opinion is against many of our actions and we have created more hot spots in the last 6 years which was certainly similar to how countries felt about the Romans during that period. The percentages of the economy spent on both the Roman and United States is very similar causing dissension withen our own borders. The fact that we have not done enough for New Orleans 2 years later is a major red flag in my mind. Honestly I have been thinking and reading more on the Roman Empire lately , it is not out of the realm of possibilities we are heading down that same road. Whoever is elected next is going to have to use a lot of diplomacy rather then military actions to mend some major fences. Everyday when you read about what is going on Globally you can not help ,but feel a little nervous. I hope this helped a bit. TC messtograves,

I would have to agree in the big picture of things there are allot of nations around the world that are doing there best to undermine our way of life.

Now that being said, would the hatred of America be more moderate if we were not the only super power at the moment?

I doubt that as you already know Religion doesn't really care about economics in so much as it hurts the opponents. If we look strictly from the secular point of view than we are at war with the entire world and have precious few allies.

Good Luck and God Bless.

America might last yet several more centuries or millenia. Then again, it might fall. They say the more weight, the harder something falls.

I lost my respect for its government the moment they entered war. There are other ways to solve this conflict, these sacrifices are unneccesary, and were unneccesary to begin with.

And that's not all. America was once called a "Land of Opportunity." These days, it's only a land of opportunity for those who are safely established there and not the immigrants.

No offense to the americans, but that is the truth.

I think a more important thing to consider is social decay. Near the end of the Roman empire, so many in the moderate to upper classes were alcoholics, workaholics, pedophiles, and/or drug addicts. Combined with governance that was equally disfunctional, the empire crumbled around itself.

Overall many similar traits and failings in each that are hard to pass over without thinking. It could be said of any country / empire. Both do seem to struggle over the cost of empire. and have similar social issues ( not counting 2000 years of technological advancement) but the human failings remain a constant. Greed, Hubris, Poor leadership. and of course political discourse becomes bread and circus.

I take back the part about hard to pass over without thinking....it seem most have no problem with that.

It's like Tolstoy sort of said (Anna Karenina), all happy nations are the same, all failing nations are different. The US is decaying in it's own special way.

Wouldnt quite go that far. It's not like every single one of our Presidents is getting assasinated, we are having open killing contests, and trying to take over all the countries around us.
