Lots of young men lack the ability to gain mass. He may go though a major growing period still, or he may remain that way for a long time. Regardless, his problem is not rare.
My brother was a very, very lean man. He does drink protien shakes that have thousands of calories and he works out a lot. There's one option to try in gaining mass.
My husband used to be teeny! Really! We dated 4 years ago and he was about 115 soaking wet, while I was 165. He went into the Army and after bootcamp he had a lot of strength and mass, and I know he was drinking the same protein shakes at the same time that he was so physically active.
In the meantime, though, if he's not actively persuing ways to gain mass, he should take the same percautions as anyone who may not easily defend him or herself. IE, don't walk around in alleys, avoid the people who are generally awful to him, and yes, someone mentioned becoming friends with larger people who may be able to help him, like football players or something. It is good to have people on your side who can help.
You could suggest that the two of you join tae quan do or karate or some other means of self-defense, and package it as a work-out. It is good for ANYbody, small, large, male, or female, to know how to defend him or herself.
In helping him to feel better, just remember to cheer him on for all the great qualities he has. You two may think of something else as a team.
Good luck!

I feel for people like this. I guess it would also depend on his age. Could he get into sports like wrestling? He could earn respect that way. Or he could go the other route by having someone arrested for assult! I would just hate to see him let the anger build up because some people are so stupid, and have to act like jerks! He truly needs to realize that the people who pick on him are the real stupids as*es!! That he is way better than them! Sure it may not seem that way, since it's him they are picking on. He needs to tell those people to grow up and get a life! Go to the school principal, have them dismissed for a day or two. People do need to learn to take responsibility for their actions! Good luck!

He totally needs to stick up for himself. Go to a teacher or counselor and get advice from them.
Tell him not to give up on people, a lot of them are jerks, but a lot of them are nice too!

try to stay positive and just say that it would be easier to ignore them then let them get a reaction out of you. if they realize that your ignoring them they won't like picking on you anymore.
