A few in the group might applaud when they hear the name of their home town. They would definitely applaud after the national anthem at an event.
But I think that you would hear the greatest applause when George Bush steps down to introduce the new president...it won't even matter who that next president is!

I was at the airport once and everyone applauded a group of servicemen and women who were getting off their plane. I thought it was nice considering all they do (even though I don't agree with the war).
