Luckily if it happens it won't be in my lifetime or my son's life time. Any contender? Right now none come to mind. No not even the much vaulted, by some, China. They like India have to manage their population crisis (number, education, access to technology, access to infrastructure) before coming into a dominate world position. I would venture to say that 2 countries not on the top 5 list are France and Canada. I hope that is of some comfort.

The EU certainly has the numbers and the diversity of resources. It lacks collective thought and patriotism, though, except in their dislike of the United States.
China is a major contender...both in size and resources. They are coal rich at present...and are seeking oil reserves. With that accomplished...watch out.
Throughout history, empires have fallen. As will happen with the US. It will not signal the end of the world...and it would not be the worst thing to happen. There are many extremely prosperous and thriving nations who are happy not to be 'the greatest nation in the world'. I fear the emotional and mental meltdown that will happen to Americans, though, as they have not known anything but domination for the last 60+ years.

Probably China and/or Japan. They are where we were during our prime in the 40/50's. They've got technology, money, and smarts, now all they need is for us to self-destruct.

it wont happen in our lifetime i dont think but it will happen eventualy no country remains the greatest for ever. however i think its to early to tell which country will take over
