I have a 1990 Buick Lasabre and first of all, the steering wheel is off center to the left. When I turn left, there is a grinding sound. When I straighten out the wheel, it is no longer crooked for a moment, then it catches and jerks left again. Any ideas what this might be?

Probably a wheel bearing. Jack up the left front wheel and after its off ground use both hands on each side and try to wiggle it. It takes alot of effort but if it moves thats your problem. Also if this is what it is the tire will fall off when the bearing breaks so fix immediatly.
looks like lots of advice but nobody agree's take it to a shop.

It sounds to me like your control arm bushings need to be replaced.

Find a good chassis shop, or alignment shop. Make sure there's old guys working there who have been around the block a time or two.

I use Pearson's Alignment in Bakersfield. The guy really knows his stuff.

I wouldn't use a chain shop, try to find an independent shop that checks out with the BBB and get that fixed.

You're driving a dangerous car.
