Im not that old, 33, but it seems like the kids get 300.00 ipods and psp's and their parents apologize for not being able to get them more... and it seems like the kids are never the ones that are looked at when there is a problem... example, bad student = the school not doing thier job, I don't agree with this mentality.. I know this will raise a few brows, but i'm curious what others think

A couple good points brought up, I wanted to add some more.

When I was a kid i had a paper route when i was 13 and i made crap money but It ended up being a great character builder for me, so i benefited... also i worked at McDonalds and busted my butt for 4.00 an hour... now that same kid just says "Why would i do that, it's gross and demeaning", It just bothers me cause i had to work so hard to get all the things that nowadays are sooooooooooooooooooo taken for granted... and getting cars for birthdays/graduation? that is absolutely the wrong message to send to children...

The message, " you do what you are supposed to do and you get a car" Not the time for a reward, seems like some/many parents are trying to buy love from their children.. what happened to teaching them all the lessons in life to make them better people?

well what do you expect? the children go to their parents for love and attention, and these parents think the way to raise a child is to buy them a new car. you cannot blame them. as babies they react to their environment. children need attention, and when they dont get it, things go bad. just like heated water on a stove top

They are Spoiled Rotten they get every thing handed to them. Years ago when I was a Child everybody was Poor and had to Eke out a living from Day to Day most of the People didnt know if there was going to be a meal on the Table when they got Home at Night. It was really bad People were Starving , and had to Pawn there Good Clothing on Monday and Redeem it on Saturday to have for Sunday Service the next Day. Maybe If there was an economic Downturn and suddenly it went back to the 1950s and 60s they would soon wake up and not be moaning all the time give me more I want more.

I have a 7 and a 6 year old. The day I decided to bring them to Southamerica two years ago, believe it or not, changed their whole point of view about things. We are from Italy living in Manhattan, exposed to a society that can pretty much offer your children everything but to the key of NOT raising "brats" is to comunicate to them, not shielding them from the rest of the world. Expose them to little things like "volunteer work" and simply show them, how good life is to them, even without owning all the newest toys. I am very proud to say, once they see other cultures and situations at such an early age, they will understand so much more. They suddenly appreciate whatever the have.
Remember television and school, is always updating them of all the new toys and gadgets but you as a parent, have the only solution to how "not to get your children involved" in such a vicious circle.

I think is because parents these days don't have the time or the strength to teach their children that they should work for the things they want, by this I mean getting good grades at school, doing what are they told to do, or as you did, working their asses off. Because this really takes a lot of work, you have to explain to them a lot of things listen to their arguments and complains, etc.

It is truth what you say, my boyfriend's little sister is a lousy student and she is only in elementary school but for Christmas she always gets the last video game console (last year was the Nintendo Wi), and their parents give her everything she wants just to avoid arguing with her! Is unbelievable! I remember had to get very good grades is school to get nice presents for my birthdays or Christmas! I remember I painted my house and then my dad would give some money and things like that.

Today's teenagers are very very spoiled.

Kids like material things, especially girls / women,I believe that has something to do with that we are emotional,ETC.
Kids want the last this and that.... because they wanna fit it and are still trying to find their own identity.
It is way harder to be a parent nowadays than what it once used to be.
If you can't provide your kids with every little toy they want, don't feel bad,it doesn't make you a bad parent.
Make them work / earn every thing they want if there is not a birthday or Christmas,it's a part of discipline and they will appreciate it later on in life.
I know one thing,if something has been given to you as a gift, you don't appreciate it as much as you would if you had worked hard and earned it yourself.
Good things don't come easy, but hard work makes it worth it!

parents do a lot of things out of guilt. acting from guilt is not the ideal way to parent. parents give their kids material possessions so their kids will love them. parents give their kids "things" in place of love and guidance because it is easier. then kids expect things. if they can not get their parents attention they will take "things". it is a dangerous cycle.
as for issues with kids parents can not be honest because they will feel guilty. easier to blame someone else than yourself.
parents really need learn how to parent and realize that when you have kids you take on responsibility. you are a parent not a friend. that means putting in the time and teaching your kids "values",

kids these days feel like they need to live up to certain expectations to be accepted. not having an ipod or a psp may cause some people to think they are unacceptable... i know it sounds ridiculous but i saw something about it on tv and how little girls are becoming more "sexy" bc of influences these days. the school thing, i wouldn't blame it all on the school or all on the kid.

You are absolutely right.I think the parents are responsible for creating a generation that will have many problems in the future. If you love your child you will fasten his seatbelt so it is the same with his behaviour. If you love your child give him education it is a gift that cannot be purchased yet it is worth a million.
