Hello

I'm coming back to California in September and I've decided to stay over in San Diego.

I was just wondering from Los Angeles which was the best way to get there, I don't drive so I would be looking at going by Train or plane, which is better? And if it's train where are the nearest train stations..

Thanks
Andrew

Unfortunately there isn't an easy way to get from LAX to San Diego - at least until they finish the elevated magnetic train that's in design (http://sdlamaglev.org/m3solu.htm). First you have to get from LAX to either the bus station or train station, both of which are in downtown LA. You would do that by the rail line - first the green line, then the blue line north to the red or purple to Union Station (http://www.mta.net/images/rail_map.pdf). Then you have to wait for the right bus/train and stop at the Old Town transit center. The San Diego Regional transit map (http://www.sdcommute.com/Rider_Information/Regional_Transit_Maps/PDFs/regional_northcentral_sep06.pdf) shows how to get around once you are in San Diego. For example, if you look at the Old Town transit center, you can see you would hop bus 8 or 9 to get to Sea World.

An alternative however that is a LOT easier is to see what it would cost to make your trip actually go to San Diego instead of LAX. Then you can have a stop over for several days in Los Angeles, making it a three way trip instead of a round trip. I did this frequently when traveling on business and it usually meant the airfare was about the same price as just the round trip - if the stopover was someplace that I could have flown to as a regular stop (which San Diego to LAX is).
Then you follow the San Diego maps once there.

For a hotel in San Diego, I recommend the Super 8 Old Town. Very close and a nice hotel for the price.

Lindberg Field, SantaFe (or Old Town) station and Greyhound terminal are relatvely close to Sea World, however -
airfare from LAX to SAN is minimum $230 RT ~ 1 hr + 1hr ckin
shuttle $89 RT ~ 3 hours
Amtrak to closest Old Town is $58 RT, 2 1/2 hour
Greyhound is $27RT ~ 3 hours depending on rush hour
