I spent 18 days in Mexico, and at the end of those 18 days I could communicate well enough in Spanish to be understood . Of course my verbs were horrible and my pronunciation was terrible . But... there are many , many Mexicans here who have been here 20+ years and still say " alto" instead of " stop". They know no English ... not even basic every day terms. This is the height of laziness !!!

Mostly because they are lazy and there is a huge Spanish speaking community in the US. Why should they learn English when American business and Govt. cater to them.

Most come here looking for a decent paying job, usually in manual labor due to lack of English skills. They, for the most part, don't have the luxury to attend a school due to the long hours of working in fields, etc. Also, since they have connections with family, friends, and the system whom they can communicate in Spanish, they have less incentive for now.

Because they don't have to any more. They are provided with translators, my husbands family were not, that was 35 years ago.We have to get them to speak the language to break down the barriers. If we go to Mexico, we are not treated the same they could care less if you understand their language and do not have to provide a translator...

Have you EVER tried learning another language? It takes a long time. Most people are learning, it just takes a while.

It is probably a hard language to learn. I am sure that most of them try to learn it. the best way to learn a language is to hang out with the proficient speaker. and with atitudes like this, i can see why its hard for them to find influence
