In order to maximize your chances at conception, you need to know when you're ovulating. Ouvlation happens between ten and sixteen days before your period. Count the first day of your period (real bleeding, not spotting) as Day 1. If your cycle is 28 days, that means that you'll ovulate between day 12 and day 18. If your cycle is 35 days, you'll ovulate between day 19 and day 25.
You can try and track ovulation by using the Fertility Awareness Method, which uses your basal body temperature (taken with a basal body thermometer,as soon as you wake up, after at least three hours of sleep, at the same time each morning, before you sit up and get out of bed, etc) along with observing the cervix position and texture, and the cervical mucous. You can learn more about that from the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, or the website Fertilityfriend.com. You could also use ovulation predictor kits (available in most drug stores with the pregnancy tests) which dectect the surge of a particular hormone in your body that rises when you ovulate.

If the 1st day of your period was March 3, then the best days to get pregnant would be the 14th-18th. If your period ended on March 3rd, then the best times would be March 8th-14th.
