Wel the first answer obviously knows nothing about reptiles a chameleon is a terrible reptile for a beginner trust me i own 6 at the moment. i also Have owned an iguana for 8 years now and It would be suitable for you if youy are willing to give it a large enclosure that will cost quite a bit and You will have to ask yourself if you can live with a reptile that gets 6 feet long. For you I would suggest a bearded dragon, asian water dragon or a leopard gecko
These are all relatively easy to take care of and are pretty friendly ideal for the beginning reptile owner. leopard gecko being the easiest than bearded dragons and finally the hardest of the 3 water dragons who will eventually reach almost 3 feet if properly cared for and will require a large enclosure.

do not get a chameleon if you have never owned a lizard. They are one of the hardest pets to keep alive, and stop eating if you look at them too long (I have owned some).

An easy beginner lizard would be a gecko. They are tame and can handle stress pretty well. Any land dwelling desert type lizard should be easy, but geckos are the most common. Plus, they can be happy with a UVB/UVA bulb, a heat rock and some sand in a 10 gallon- easy nice set-up for a beginner lizard owner. Another easy lizard is a bearded dragon- pretty tame and easy to please.

Definately start with an easy common pet- you can get more advanced lizards as you gain more experience.

Stay away from ones that need high humidty, unless you are up for that challenge, and know that if you do not do the set up correctly (and put all the money in to it) it will die.

Good luck! They are fun.

Jason C. had the best advice. Having both in my Pet Shop for almost twenty years, time availability would be my main concern. If you have alot of time, and space a Iguana is o.k. A species of Leopard Gecko is ideal, but making sure you have the right equipment is costly, as is the Bearded Dragon, (my choice). The latter require less time with them, as the Iguana grows, so does his space needed, and more importantly, Iguana get aggressive if not handled constantly !! Having alot of each of these critters over the years, Iguana would be #3, Bearded Dragon #2, and Leopard Gecko (not a baby) would be #1. Check out www.Kingsnake.com. Care sheets, classifieds, and a good source for wholesalers like me. A one stop shop. Good Luck !!

I would suggest getting a Leopard Gecko, or a Bearded Dragon they are docile and a fairly easy to care for. Leopard Geckos require a minimum of a 10 gallon tank, and a Bearded Dragon which requires a minimum of 50 gallon tank.

Do not get an Iguana or a Chameleon they are very difficult to keep. Iguanas get 7ft and can be aggresive and Chameleons can't be handled.

when i was picking out my first lizard i would hear over and over agian not to rush into anything... BUT WHAT IS RUSHING!
i know to do all the research and look at all the pet stores and and ask a million and one questions but that was not enough to help me pick the right lizard.
so confussed and my mind expolding with info. on lizards i would most likely never buy, i came up with an idea i think will help you.
i made a list of 5 lizards i like just on looks and interests.
of course some made that list because of the things i heard/learned about them but that was okay (dont worrie about it... if they are on the list its a step in the right direction because if your interested in them you wont have to worrie about lossing interest in them) which leads me to step 2.
go to web sites or even a local animal shelter and find everything bad about them or that happens to them...
I KNOW THAT SOUNDS WEIRD but trust me it can have a real positive effect.
1 you might NOT buy that pet because you dont think you can handle that or
2 it will show you that you can handle it and maybe even make an effort into insuring your not the next guy or girl to do the "bad" to another animal.
now some people might yell at me for this because it could turn someone away from an animal (their favorite most likely...which may cause offence but im not naming animals. im showing you how to find one you like)
the one that makes you feel the best about making "IT" your final decision is most likely the one you should spend your time looking into or should buy.
now let me say i got myself into a "pickle" a few times over this methood. 1 time i had to re - do the methood because i was not sure about what i came up with and the final time it came with the answer most find REALLY REALLY stupid.
what ended up happening was i went to a shelter and i saw this blue toung skink in a tank. it was pretty beat up but when i asked about it they said it was healthy and could be adopted. now from what i heard it was really beaten up and left to die untill the shelter had found it. I WAS SO MAD when i heard the story but this is why i now have the best pet ever.
Because i got angry and becuse i wanted to fix the "bad' done to this poor animal the right way. i worked extra hard so i could be the best owner this Skink had and i adopted it!
i called him skinky and he is such a great pet! he gets along with my other pets (i can let my guinnea pigs sit with him on my lap and they enjoy each others compainy and heat lol) and with all the kids i have in my house! the youngest kid being 2 years old! (thats with supervision)
enough about me blabing about my pets :P
this methood DOES WORK!
i have used it. my friends have used it and if you use it i know it will help or even find you new pet :D

Do some research on the internet about different types of reptiles you might be interested in and their care requirements, cost, time you'll need to spend, enclosure size needed, lifespan, adult size etc. Alot of things go into making a decision like that.
