Hi. I'm a 21-year old girl who lives in Orange County and all I do is work part-time at a coffee shop and go on the internet all day. I want to join a group or save a life or DO SOMETHING fun! I need a hobby or something. How do i GET SOMETHING STARTED in my Life? Anyone know any good ideas for groups to join or something?

Orange County has a great Parks and Recreation department that offers classes on almost anything you may want to try. It's cheap too. Usually around $20, and maybe a fee for supplies depending on the class.
Dancing, martial arts, crafts, languages, there is a lot to choose from.
Their website will have more details.
Michaels and Tall Mouse craft stores have classes too.
Volunteer.
The SPCA and animal control would love to have you. So would old folks homes, libraries, hospitals, museums and theaters. Teach someone to read. Any library has more information on teaching adults to read.
The Orange County website should have more ideas for volunteering as well.
Start something.
A neighborhood garden, a children's choir, a tutoring group, organize a dog walk, a car wash, a "speed dating" night.
Hope this helps.

I know, I feel exactly the same way. I wanted to join one of those peacecorp things but there was a deadline and some requirements that I couldn't or wasn't qualified to do. Well, I started going to college and I needed a job that was flexible so I could go to school and take time of to take care of my parents, grandparents, and family problems. I have a friend and she got me into MaryKay cosmetics. I decided It was a good way to make money, but I got the idea of going to like nursing homes and hospitals and giving free facials to the patients. Then I would sell to the nurses and doctors. It's kinda of killing two birds with one stone. I love doing their makeup and it makes you feel good. Something else that you can do along those lines is just volunteer at a hospital, nursing home, or childrens hospital, animal shelter etc. If yo go to school or college there are a lot of clubs they have you could join. I don't know if ORange County has one but theres this thing called big brothers big sisters and thats a good program to join to. Not to mention all this loooks good on your resume etc. If your strong enough you can volunteer as a firefighter or ambulance girl. I have friends who do that to. ANyways, good luck finding something. Whatever you choose I'm sure it'll be great.

Moxie,
While you have some bogus answers and some very good replies, it all depends on you.
What works for me doesn't necessarily work for you.
I suggest going somewhere very quiet and still and thinking about what you want to do. (when you learn the technique that I am talking about, you will be able to hear your inner voice)
It seems to me that you need a find a real direction for your life first. (part time coffee shop doesn't exactly strike anybody as something that is going to turn into something.)
While 21 is still very young, it doesn't take long to get to 38.
You should be thinking about long term goals (and the short term goals that need to be met in order to get to the long term goals)
If you want to save a life, become a paramedic or such.
Maybe out where you are, you can be a police officer and help those in need. If I could do it all over again, I would go Army--MP--then get out and be a cop for awhile and then aim for the bomb squad or swat...But that would be me.

Maybe you would enjoy being a teacher and making a positive impact on the lives of our children...

You have to answer this one for yourself

You can start your own online radio station. You can play music files, and / or broadcast your voice. Invite your friends to tune in and other folks as well. Then, you will be able to give advice, have the listeners call you on the phone or chat with you, etc. It is a good way to begin a relationship with people from all over.

Talk about saving lives. This is a good way of starting what you have in mind.

Have fun and enjoy!!!

You must like something, and there are all kinds of groups, and volunteers are always needed. You could start by volunteering with something you think would be great. Then if it is, go from there, if not try something else. Think health or child care or sick children or environment or social services or politics or writing or reading or crafts! What are you interested in, then just go for it!

You're going about it backwards. People who get things started are never bored because their mind is always turning. First, get an hour of vigorous exercise a day. It's good for a sharp mind.

Try to make a conscious effort to be curious about EVERYTHING. As soon as you discover that you like doing something, set about being the BEST at it. If you can't get yourself into that frame of mind, talk to your doctor about depression.
