are there any stores besides the internet where i can buy gundam models or action figures?

I think you have to go to specialty stores or toys r us to get your hands on gundam models.
FYI: In Asia, there are a lot of gundam models on sale at different toy shops, toys r us and othe rmajor department stores included. In Japan, they actually have a store that is solely devoted to Gundams!

Not knowing where you are this is a hard question.
In my area I find them in some comic book hobby shops , but mostly and with the most variety I find Gundam models and figurines at asian hobby shops and toy stores.

Models...
Anime models are usually found in Anime shops or Modelling/Hobby shops.. Most hobby shops will have the model sets and tools you'll need to make it. Including paint, stanley knife, etc.
You won't find these in places like toys r'us.. simply because of two reasons:
1. They have no seals on them - shoplifter's treasure.
2. They're recommended for ages about 12+

My son is always searching too. The only places we can find them anymore is eBay (of course!) and other internet stores.
I know it's not what you want to hear. My son is the same way. He wants his "Hands On!" I think they've been discontinued though.
