When I was still in the seminary, we have these red eared turtle for more than 20 years, Our seminary had it during the 80's i think 1986 to be exact. but until now they are still alive. your turtle must have a partner and should have a bigger aquarium or a pond to make them more active. we just fed them pellets and they tend to eat our fish in the pond. maybe that is what make them live for more than 2 decades. hope this would help.

What kind of turtle is it? Turtles need more than pellets alone, they need fresh foods as well (carrots romaine lettuce, fruit etc. depending on breed of course). Its recommended that they have a special reptile light that produces a good amount of UVB not just UVA. Also a basking light, that produces heat for her to bask under. These items can be bought from a pet store or online, sometimes a regular light bulb can work as a basking bulb. An aquarium heater for her water. Good quality filtration of the water in her tank and frequent water changes etc. Depending on her size she probably needs a larger enclosure. She needs plenty of water to swim in.... etc
I'm happy to see that you are asking how to make sure your turtle is happy and healthy... so many people never even think to ask and too often the pet stores are so eager to sell a pet that they don't tell buyers everything that they need to know.
That is how I aquired my turtles, two little girls had them and didn't know how to care for them. When their mother found out everything it involved in caring for them properly, she just gave them away.
Try looking at: http://www.austinsturtlepage.com for more info on how to keep your turtle happy and healthy!
It isn't my page but it is very useful when learning about turtle care, there is a forum there as well.

Go to the fishing store and get some red wiggler worms and some feeder guppies from the pet store. Feed her one worm on occasion (too much fat for a steady diet) and see if she chases the guppies. since she's going on 4 you must know about the calcium block.
Good luck!

Do you have a red ear slider? Make sure you have a heater for her. I like my matt heater which keeps her tank at least 70 degrees. Also feed her some rosey reds. They love fish and it's good for them! Chicken is also a good treat for them.
