I live in Miami and I planted Bouganvillea 2 years ago... its amazing how much it will grow... I have a red, a purple, orange, and yellow... this is the one plant everyone complements... I keep adding more colors...
I don't even water it, just the rain, and it looks amazing. Last year I would water them more and they didn't flower as much. Go figure, I forgot about them for a few months and they did better with just the natural rain. Only drawback is it has these sharp thorns... I recommend you wear a jacket and thick gloves when you trim it... but you only need to do this once a year before August so it will flower next season.
Believe me, If i can grow this ANYONE CAN.
Here's a website with the description... it also has the description on many plants and is a great source: http://www.floridata.com/ref/b/boug_spp.cfm

There are some succulents (cactus-ish) that also have blossoms. Your local garden center or nursery will have a list of the succulents that thrive in your zone (areas are divided into zones of vegetation) and then you can pick the one that has the blossoms that you like.

Seriously, go out one weekend and buy plastic flowers... the neighbours will just die when they see how awesome the garden looks and how long they last... especially when the first snow flies and they're still there blooming!

We have really hot summers and I've never seen my vinca vine wilt or wither. It has small purple flowers all over and does well literally ANYWHERE!

I've always found that dandelions don't require care and are pretty much immortal!
Good luck with your garden.....

I find lilac's and forcythias (not sure of spelling) are very hearty, and do well in heat.
