1# Prep the lid. The key to keeping eyeshadow from melting into your eyelid crease as the day goes on is to kept eyelids oil-free. To do this start with an eyeshadow base. I prefer to dab at bit of MAC's 'paint' on lids before shadow application. Or try Fresh Freshface Perfecting Eye Primer.
2# Apply eyeliner. If you're going for a typical black, brown or gray smoky eye, apply liner in one of those colors above the upper lash line, drawing line thicker in the middle of eye. If your opting for a jewel-toned eye (violet makes a gorgeous smoky eye), line eyes with a purple, blue or deep green liner.
3# Blend in color on bottom lashes For color on the bottom (a key smokey eye look) you'll want a lighter eyeliner & the key is to 'smudge it'. You can also apply a bit of shadow to get full smudge effect.
4# Apply light base color Again, the key to a smoky eye is pairing a lighter base with the darker hue. I prefer a nice cream shade for my base. Sweep a light, shimmery shadow over the lids to your browbone. I love Stila's whipped eye shadows $20. The moist 'mousse' consistency seems to stay on forever. My favorite colors are taupe & pearl.
5# Blend in darker color, but keep dark color below the crease. Now that you have the base & eyeliner on, it's time to get the smoky effect. You need a darker eyeshadow shade. Using an eyeshadow brush blend in color starting at your lash line & blending up. Make sure to blend color into the lash line so the eye liner disappears. Stop deep color at crease.
6# Doublecheck your work Make sure eyes match & blend color with a Q-tip if need be.
7# Finish with several coats of volumizing mascara. Tried & true mascaras (featured in 'Elle' magazine's March 2006 issue) include DiorShow Mascara & L'Oreal Paris Volume Shocking Mascara. 'Elle's writer says they are the best volumnizers she's tried.

Great work tania*
Very nice clip attached there. Start with a base coat of a neutral shade, use a deeper shade in the crease and maybe use a q tip with the end moistened and dip that in the darkest of the three shades you have picked. Smudge that in the upper crease of the lid. Then apply eye liner to the top lid thin in the corner fanning out towards the last in a cat like look. And on the bottom another line thinner and smudge it with another q tip or shadow brush. Apply mascara last if you so wish and I always like using a eye lash curler as well. Good Luck and have fun!

You need eyeliner (preferably pencil to smudge -- liquid doesn't work to the same effect), good quality mascara, and smoky grey, black or dark brown eyeshadow.
You need to line the top lid and outer edge of the bottom lid, focussing on the edge and smudging outwards. Once you have a nice shape, fill in the contours and smudge eyeshadow upwards towards your brow, in a shape that suits your type of eye shape.
Once you're happy with this effect and are certain your eyes are even, get a wet tissue and run over the parts which you still want to be skin-coloured (just underneath your brow, under your eyes etc) where the stray eyeshadow usually falls.
Then, as a finishing touch, apply plenty of mascara to top lashes, and a fine coat to the outer bottom lashes.
This is how I always do it, and girfriends always ask me to show them how!
Gorgeous :)

1. Apply your foundation, under eye concealer and powder. Or whichever you use.
2. Apply the eyeliner on about 3/4 or 1/2 of the LOWER lid. If you apply it on the whole eye it will make your eyes look smaller.
3. Use your eyeshadow brush to apply the dark eye shadow over the top of the smudged line for a soft smoky look.
Keep in mind that lighting is very important when you apply your make-up and that clothes and make-up that match will be harmonious. PS. I totally love Almay or Clinique. Amazing amazing shadows!!! Have FUN!!

Heavily line the eyes and use a dark shade on the lids and to contour. Remember if you go dark on the eyes go neutral on the lips

How To Get The Smokey Eye Look
Hi!! Um I have been reading all of your advice i'ts so kool THANKS!! But one question... How do you do Smokey eyes like Hilary Duff?
Hilary Duff does do Smokey eyes well! She is also combining Smokey with a slight cat eye. She takes the darker shade and extends it past her outer eye in an upward "cat" eye motion. It's not as severe as normal "cat" eyes because she softens the look with a medium shade along the middle and a light shade along the upper eyelid just below the eyebrow. She also has a matching shade of eyeliner along the upper eye and also along the lower eye. She blends this color by using her medium eye shadow over her lower eyeliner. The only way she can do this is to use the proper brushes for application. You won't get a good Smokey or even a good "cat" eye with the applicator that comes in your eye shadow compact. You will need to invest in two brushes for this look. You will need: Chisel Angle Fluff Brush - For all over color and under eye brow
Chisel Double Shader Brush - For contouring and blending
A trio eye shadow or three shades of color: light, medium, dark preferably in a Smokey hue like:
Shadow Trio Eclipse Grapevine Amoré
Eye liner color Charcoal Charcoal Prune
Mascara color Black Black Black
Eye lash curler AND AN INDEX CARD!
I will walk you through Amoré.
1) Using your Angle Fluff Brush apply the cream color all over your eyelid
2) Apply the Prune eye liner along the upper eye closest to your eye lash in about 1/16th inch line, start at the inner eye and go all the way across your eye to outer most portion of your eye angling up and out at the end.
3) Use the Index card and place it at a 45-degree angle against the outer portion of your eye.
4) Using the double shader brush, apply the burnt red color over the Prune eye shadow and lower lid.
5) Keep the index card in place and using the double shader, apply the dark brown color in a diagonal from the center eye to the outer eye stopping just above the middle crease of your eye.
6) Remove index card.
7) Using your Angle Fluff Brush (it should still have a bit of the cream shadow in the brush) in a one directional brush stroke going to the outer portion of your eye, brush once or twice outward to blend the colors and to soften the line left by the index card. Clean brush and dip in cream color for the opposite eye.
8) Curl your eye lashes using a curler and 30 seconds of pressure on your upper eye lashes
9) Apply the black mascara in two layers.
The smoky look is done with shades of grey or charcoal or in blues or berries/purple and violet shades. You can keep your black eye liner and black mascara. For the evening you can darken with deeper blues, black (but not if you have a light skin tone) and grays, coupled with false eyelashes for added drama. Now to get the look follow these steps:
Step 1. Line top and bottom lashes with cranberry, green or black depending on your eye color.
Step 2. Smudge and blend the line so the color smoothly transitions from the lashes.
Step 3. Layer an eye shadow of a contrasting or coordinating shade on top of the liner, blending up and out at the outer corner of the eye. (This part is tricky and if not done right will result in that dirty smudged look you hate). I suggest you look for a liner brush or a Q-tip to help you.
Step 4. Add a second layer of eye shadow in a lighter shade at the crease of the eye and blend up toward the eyebrow. Trend upward with the color and at an angle at the outer corner of your eye, like "Cat eyes" without as much drama.
Step 5. Add your Mascara for the final touch.

More:
A lot of eye pencils have the ends with the sponges that are used for smudging the liner this causes the eyes to look smoked and mysterious.
hope this helps
peace
