I have noticed in serval places where the letter U was carved and looked exactly like a V on early American things like court houses.......anyone know the reason this was done?

U did not become distinguished in form from V in English until the middle ages and the difference was not standardized until much later. So when an attempt is made to imitate or harken back to classical times (Greece and Rome) as is often the case on public buildings U is written as V, as it would have been by the Romans.
