I am having a hard time finding happiness within myself. I just recently went threw a painfull break up after a 14 year relationship. I know that I am a wonderful good looking person. I have wonderful children. But I just can't seem to be happy. I would love to be in a relationship, but I don't want that to be the reason I am happy. I would love to be happy within myself. How?

I am sorry for what you are going through right now. While time does heal, I believe what we do with that time gets us through the healing process. Time to focus on ourselves and what we already do have and that will give you the confidence that others will see and feel and when the right person comes along you will be ready and it will just happen. Also, try not to criticize or judge yourself for something that may have happened. I know it may not be much comfort to you right now, but one day you will be looking back at this time of your life with the memories you have but you will have grown into a person that will be happy and content! Hope this helps and be well!

I certainly can't say for sure that this is your situation, but I have read that for some people it depends on how their parents treated or didn't treat them as they were growing up that can contribute to this.

Example: Your mother never would be happy with your unless you did exactly what she wanted, and you had no voice to say anything in return. Whether you agreed or not you would do it to keep her happy and in turn you happy.

So this translates into you seeking others approval or happiness in order to be happy yourself.

I have no idea if this is your case at all, but that's one thing I remember reading about it in the past.
