You have already taken the first step in controlling your emotions by admitting to yourself that this is a problem for you.
Help can be obtained by reading books on the subject and applying advice to yourself or getting help from a therapist.
Perhaps, you have a friend that you can consult with when you feel troubled.

Good luck!

There are different ways of controlling emotions, and for each person, and for each emotion, control excercises and techniques are different. Here's usually what I do for the basic display of emotions I feel:

Anger- Close my eyes, take a deep breath, and think of something serene and/or peaceful, such as small turtles drifting through a softly running stream, or flowers in a meadow being blown by caressing spring breezes.

Sadness- Think of something I enjoy or am good at, someone I know who cares about me, or plans for the future I want to carry through.

Excitement- Try to stay as sedentary as possible, after a while, the rush of unwanted energy is gone.

Jealousy- Mentally (NOT VERBALLY) belittle small things about the object or person in question. Accept who you are and what you have. Talk to some friends and see that what you have is much more important than a want.

Your emotions are a natural part of life and they are not meant to be controlled, but if you are having a hard time with them coming out at inopportune moments then it sounds to me like you are not expressing them properly in private. There is a time for everything even a time to cry. If you feel sad then cry, if you feel angry then yell! Or however you express anger. When you are all alone ask yourself what it is you want to express and express it. Then it will not come creeping back up when you don't want it to. It will be gone. Also we as women tend to get more emotional around that time of the month. But if you notice it is always about something we care deeply about. I hope this helped in some way and good luck!

Emotions can be controlled by reasoning. The first step is to recognize them and be aware of them. Let's say you get angry, you say to yourself "I am angry and it feels awful, will the reason of my anger go away because I'm angry?" Try to analyze the feeling and the very process will calm you down. Mindfulness and awareness of your emotions temper them. Be aware that moods (emotions) are temporary, they pass, so when you feel awful think that it will pass soon.
Another way is to find a distraction, Do something you enjoy, read a book, listen to music, anything to take your mind of whatever bothers you.

The book, "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle.

I don't agree with all of the ideas in this book, but the one thing I really enjoyed and got empowered by were the exercises which helped me calm down my emotional part and disconnect them from the normal organic workings of my brain.

Our brain is an organ. One of it's jobs is to create ideas. Most of these ideas are not useful to us in enjoying our lives. It's our choice which idea we decide to utilize.

Regarding our emotions, there is a part of us that wants to wail, cry, stomp our feet, throw things. Some of the exercises help us tame this part down - which then tames down our emotions and allows us to think more clearly. It's good to have emotions. Let's use them properly.

My psychologist had me read this book. Best advice I ever got.

I don't know if you can learn to control the emotion but you can learn to control your response to situations. If someone upsets you, count to 10 or even 100 before you respond. In other words think before you act on your emotional response. Responding in anger usually gets an angry response directed back at you.

Talk to someone, it's very important when you're not feeling great to talk to someone. If you have anger tell someone why you're angry, the real reasons. If you cannot talk to friends get a counselor or therapist.

Also get exercise. You can work out a lot of frustrations with exercise, and it evens out emotions a lot better. You see lots of lazy people with emotional problems out there.

Lastly, eat well. Eat regularly through the day, because if your blood sugar drops you're likely to get grumpy before you get hungry, and you won't even know. Less sugary drinks and foods too, they're awful for a person's moon 1/2 hour after you eat them and crash.

You don't need to CONTROL your emotions. Emotions are meant to be felt, processed and RELEASED. It is in trying to not feel them and contain (control) them that we humans run into problems.

Emotions are ENERGIES IN MOTION in our bodies.

Every time you don't allow yourself or you aren't allowed to fully experience an emotion, to feel it, and to move through it, the energy of that emotion becomes stopped and blocked in your body. It remains blocked until you go back and re-experience that emotion. Then the energetic block is freed and cleared. Virtually all of our physical ailments come from energetic blocks in our bodies, energetic patterns that are connected to our emotional patterns

One good way to get rid of blocked emotions that may be causing you problems is to use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or Emotional Tapping. EFT is easy to learn (you can learn the basics in 15-30 minutes). You can use EFT anytime, anywhere for any emotional or physical issue.

Please download the FREE EFT Instructional manual from the EFT website (www.emofree.com).

I learned how to use EFT last year and now use it everyday. EFT really works - ONE TECHNIQUE YOU CAN USE RIGHT NOW to release old emotions is just TAPPING LIGHTLY ON THE SIDE OF EITHER HAND where you would do a karate chop)..
