it's unusual, but not abnormal.
you just don't see it everyday, because breast is alot more strenuous.
just depends, breast is your thing =)

Your coach is correct in one aspect but not so much in another.
Certain people have different abilities and apparently your coach can't see that too well. I myself have a faster 50 yr breast time than a 50 yr butterfly time, but that's because my form for fly is absolutely horrible. But still, if you do better at breast than that's your stroke (compared to backstroke).
But as for a normal swimmer I'd say that having a better breaststroke time than a backstroke time is a bit unusual but it's not that uncommon. I'd say around 30-40% of all swimmers have a better breast than back time and the rest is vice versa. It is possible to get a really good time for backstroke, even close to other people's 100 free times. I've seen some kids swim a 53.(x) at States just these past few days so it's definitely possible to get better at it if you really try to improve it.

If you consider the following tidbit it's normal:
Olympic swimmer Aaron "King of the Backstroke" Peirsol gets bored sometimes during practice. For a challenge, he'll do the backstroke and race his fellow team members while they do other strokes. He never wins.
The backstroke and butterfly are not the same as freestyle and breaststroke. The backstroke especially can take a lot more out of you. It's possible that you misunderstood and your coach didn't really mean that he's just trying to motivate you.
In any case, your coach should never yell at you for any reason at any time. Behavior like that can crush your spirit and kill your love of the sport. You can find a lot of support from other young swimmers and get advice from coaches at USA Swimming:

It should be fine if breaststroke is by far your best stroke because that is the same way with me. It depends on the times though. If your breaststroke in a 50 is 5 seconds faster than your back then you should start trying to improve your backstroke

Breaststroke is usually the slowest sport, but I'm a breaststroker too and my backstroke is terrible! Apparently I don't rotate my shoulders enough. But if you enjoy breaststroke, then don't worry! Your coach should be happy you're fast at it, that means you'll win. =]

Just means you need to take a little more time to work on your backstroke.
Usually the strokes from fastest to slowest are:
1. Freestyle
2. Butterfly
3. Backstroke
4. Breaststroke

thats dumb. why should your coach yell at you for that??? maybe your sooo fast, that you have a way faster than average back time, and your breastroke is just amazing. well that might not be true but i still say good job for having a better back then breast time!!well no thats not actually normal
the order of fast to slow strokes is freestyle (which of course just means your fastest stroke), then butterfly, then back stroke, then breastroke.
