It is a good idea to match what your motherboard can handle with ATA 100, ATA133, ATA150, etc. And yes more cache the better, but I feel after building a few PCs that there really is just a small difference, slightly noticeable. So I usually end up going with whatever is on sale when I need a hard drive for the office PCs. Just built one with 3.0 SATA drives and a 2.6 processor. My home PC can still keep up with ATA drives and a 1.6 processor. I guess certain apps might matter, but mine don't.

Most Hard Drives are pretty good. I have some Western Digitals that are old and working. I use Hitachi Drives mostly. Not sure which you need. Here where I buy most my stuuf;

NewEgg may be a few bucks cheaper, but, these people do good too. If, you want a SATA Drive then on left find Hard Drives and find them.

Cache and speed are two very different measurements. If your motherboard supports SATA, buy one of those with a higher cache. Things will go so much smoother. Seagate and Western Digital are the best companies to go with.

Higher cache and higher RPM. I'd recommend Western Digital Raptor drives, if you can go SATA.
