The atmosphere at my workplace is very cold and tense most times. I work in a big building in a small department of five people under one boss. Some days there's hardly a word spoken between us. Most times its because our boss seems mad or frustrated or something. What can I do to loosen things up a bit and get things a little more fun, and more of a positive working environment? Any suggestions? We work in a "creative department"...I thought that meant we are supposed to be in a not "chatty" environment, but friendly and creative....you know what I mean? What should I do? It's really awkward here!

Try befriending one of your coworkers who has been there for a while...if it's acceptable to go for coffee or lunch, try to find some time away from the office where you can ask if they feel the same way you do about the atmosphere in the office and/or why the boss is so unhappy.

Then the two of you can go to the rest of the group with some suggestions on how to break the ice....maybe a monthly lunch, or bringing in a cake for everyone's birthdays, etc.

You may also want to approach the boss and see if he or she might appreciate you taking the initiative to plan a department event of some sort.

Doesn't sound like an appealing place to work. How about bringing in some flowers for your desk or the receptionist's? That gets people a bit less up tight. They usually at least ask what the occasion is. You can't do anything about your boss except to try to protect yourself from his/her ill humor. Perhaps revenue is down and your boss's job is on the line. Good luck.

Do you have weekly meetings?

Try having weekly meetings where everyone can come together. Even if it's just to vent, it's needed to be a part of.

Also, talk to your boss. Could there be a contest? Maybe celebrate random holidays (National Speak Like a Pirate Day, etc)?

They used to call me "Sunshine" at my old job but being the only one that is friendly and chatty or creative gets old real quick.
Look for a better environment before you get burnt out.

You could try and find out what your boss is interested in and strike up a conversation about it to feel him out. If he takes the bait, try cracking a few jokes surrounding the topic.
