Get off your butt and start getting active, put yourself in the scene and start battling. You'll get a feel of where you have to be if you get out there more, but yes, be well read so you're not just rapping about simple stuff. - Tupac was a poet, and Nas was too - most of them do a lot of writing.

I believe that what makes a good rapper is when they rap about what has happened to them and connects their own experience to their music. They listen to others ideas and they have their own style that is totally different from someone else's. And you don't rap about perverse things such as sex or naked women or men. Also, I think that in your music you send messages to say that you shouldn't do drugs or something since kids and adults listen to music that will cause them to become bad citizens and it will affect others.

do you mean great as in famous, or as in actually good at rapping?
if you mean the latter, then all your questions are: yes.
if you mean the former, then you need a lot of female dancers and a grill.
