Whiplash occurs when your head is suddenly jerked forward out of its normal range of motion causing injury to the muscles, ligaments and soft tissues. The most common cause is a car accident where you are hit from behind.

Symptoms are:
neck pain
stiffness
dizziness
shoulder pain
headache
memory issues
irritability
Also, the symptoms may not develop until hours later or even the next morning!

Treatment used to always be a soft neck (cervical) collar though some doctors are getting away from that now. Ice can be applied for the first 24 hours, heat after the 24 hour period. That is followed by gradual gentle movement of the neck (exercises may be provided by the doctor). The doctor will also probably prescribe muscle relaxants and possibly pain medication (though a NSAID such as ibuprofen or advil might be recommended instead). Whiplash usually resolves in a few weeks to a few months.
