I know this is a very common problem with GM cars, my question is whether or not there has ever been a recall.

No this is a girl just trying not to get screwed and trying to get around spending $1000 for this repair.

There is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) but no recall. The TSB merely describes the problem and how to fix it and is very routine. Lots of cars have lots of TSB's listed. Recalls are generally only done on safety issues. A leaking manifold gasket is not a safety issue.

This is not a job I would want to get the cheapest price on, unless of course, you plan to get the job done again in a couple of years. My shop is one of the more expensive places to get this job done for example, but we do it right. Unlike the cheap shops that just replace the 2 gaskets and maybe change the oil we do a complete job of it. While we are in there we also replace the thermostat, the distributor shaft seal (very common source of oil leaks), heater hose fitting (common source of coolant leaks) and the intake manifold bolts. We also flush the coolant and the oil, either of which could have been contaminated by the leaking gasket but something cheap shops (and some dealers) don't do. Those little details are cheap to take care of while we are already in there, expensive to take care of later. Also, cheap shops use cheap parts. Not all replacement gasket sets are created equal. If you don't want to do this job again in 2 years time, don't use the cheapest bid.

Are you the same guy with the 2001 that's leaking the "yellow/brown" stuff in another question here? If I was right about the head gasket, I'm sorry to hear about it.

For a 2001 with normal mileage for that many years, it's unlikely that you'll get any help for a blown head gasket on a recall, even if there had been one.

no, GM never recalled their engines for this problem even though they should have, it's a problem a lot of their engines have. I have had to have mine changed 2 times on a 94 grand am at $600. a pop.
