This year, the spring equinox is on March 21. From 2008 through at least 2014, it will be on March 20.

It varies from year to year depending on the earth's trajectory around the sun. So the vernal equinox can be anywhere from the 20th to the 23rd of March. This year it's on the 21st.

Australia and some other southern hemisphere countries start the seasons on the 1st of the month. It is arbitrary anyway and makes it much easier to calculate seasonal statistics. Spring starts on September 1st.
