Every night, even though i try not to, i find myself on my back sleeping. I move onto my side, but then the next time i wake up I'm on my back again. Last night it was so bad that the baby was kicking me really hard. Is this harmful to him? Or does it matter? I've heard both sides, but I don't know the extent of time I'm on my back, probably most of the night.

I told my doctor that I was having trouble and always seemed to end up sleeping on my back. He told me that was fine, just not FLAT on my back. Prop up, just a tad, by putting a pillow under your shoulders (instead of just your head), or if that isn't comfortable put a pillow just a little underneath either side of you... you don't have to be on your side-- just not flat. He showed me an example of this by putting his forearm underneath my side, just like you would a pillow... you'll be ok. It won't HURT the baby... it's just not GOOD for you, as it can contribute to back pain, hemmorhoids, etc...

The main reason you don't want to sleep on your back is because of the weight placed on the baby, placenta and cord. It can cause circulation to slow down, not providing enough oxygen to your brain, and not enough to the baby. During my last two pregnancies I spent the last trimester in a recliner. I found it very comfortable, and put a lot less pressure on the baby as well as a lot less pressure on my joints. My back felt better, my ankles swelled less and my hips stopped hurting. My last baby was born by a C-section and I continued to sleep in the recliner for about 2 weeks which really helped in my recovery.

I don't think sleeping on your back is such a bad thing. I never remember my Dr. telling me not to. As long as you are propped up a little the farther along you are I think you will be okay, the reason I suggest propping on pillows is to help you breathe as you get bigger. Sleeping at all during pregnancy is so important and I say if you sleep better on your back then go for it. Sounds like he may not like you on your back though :) Good Luck

It's ok to sleep on your back. If you start having trouble breathing then just roll to your side and lay there. You will wake up if something doesn't feel right and it won't harm unless you continue to lay on your back even when you dont feel comfortable so it'll be ok as long as you're comfortable. Hope this helped
Oh yeah and they say you can trick your body into thinking you're laying on your back by laying propped up against some pillows and you're on your side but your back is against the pillows so it feels like you're laying on your back

Its advised that you not sleep on your back because the weight of the baby can put pressure on a major artery. It could cut off blood flow to the baby and to yourself. Does it actually happen a lot? Probably not. But why risk it if you can avoid it. Use pillows to prevent turning if possible. Best of luck.

i'm 32 weeks and still sleep on my back. mostly i sleep in whatever position is comfortable to me. i believe they advise against it because it will put pressure on your nerves to your legs and such. but i figure if it doesn't bother me and i can sleep then that's how i'm going to lay. good luck.

you can sleep on your back despite what some people say. really it is best to move around and not stay in any one position for long periods of time.
