Woke up this morning to a freezing house , checked the thermostat and saw that none of the lights were on, i turned it to 85 F and tried to put it at 65F and nothing happened. could this just be the thermostat or would it be the heat itself(electric heat pump)

checked all of the wires in the thermostat with the multimeter and i didnt have any electricity at all. Opened the unit up and checked the transformer, got the 120v coming into it but i didnt get the 24v coming out. Could this be my problem or could it still be further down the line?

You probably have a short somewhere in the low voltage circuit. There may be a 3-5 amp car type fuse inline after the transformer somewhere, if not---- you have 120 or 240 v to x-former nothing out, then the x-former is bad. These do not just go bad. There is a short somewhere. You need to find and fix the short before you replace the transformer of fuse. A lot of times on heat pump systems the vibration of the unit outside will develope a hole through the insulation of the low voleage wires or other limit/controls. Sometimes a component of the furnace can short. Sometimes there are manual reset limits on the blower housing or near the heat strips. These are normally just a rectangular button that you push in to reset. Be careful-dont get zapped!!! I would recommend you have a hvac tech check it out. Hope this helped

Heat pump systems usually have an "emergency heat" setting, this turns off the outdoor section and uses the electric heating strips in the indoor section. Try this.
Also, check all your breakers and disconnects to make sure that the power is still on to the system.

A good way to check if it is the therm. or something else is to take the therm. off the wall disconnect the wires from screws. ( make sure to right down which wires go where) If dont have ac you will prob. have only 2 or maybe 3 wires . And now take the red and white wires and hold them together for a min. or so if the heat comes on its the therm. if not it is something else. Dont worry the wiring is low volyage and will not hurt you

Check the main air handler circuit breaker, then check the 24 volt fuse/circuit breaker inside the air handler.
