Or, to put the question another way, what percentage of laptop repair concepts are universal to all brands? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

MOst are definitely the same. Once you learn the inerts of one laptop computer you can competently work on another with the exception of a few brand specific details.

I will say most are the same. True a CD/DVD Drive may be shaped different and some just flip a clip and slide out and some you need to go inside to unscrew them. But, the basic concept is the same. The Big Difference you may see is how you open them up to get inside. But, I have worked on a few and it close. Find the screws, some are hidden under little round stickers and some you see most on the back. Then the top and bottom covers snap together so gently work them apart, easy to break, work slow. Most follom the same pattern to open; remove the LCD, Keyboard and then Screws. Usually when the keyboard removed you can remove fixed drives. All the Laptops I have worked on the Computer Support have a PDF File you can download and have good instructions.
